Learning activities and teaching methods
Dialogic (discussion, interview, brainstorming), Work with text (with textbook, with book), Skills training
Learning outcomes
The subject is aimed to enable the students to deepen and expand the knowledge and skills they acquired in all components of the communicative language competence during their preceding studies, when they achieved the B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). It reflects the principles of ESP course design. Communicative language competence is further developed by means of collaboartion and communication in the eLearning environment of LMS Moodle and Mahara. The subject includes skill training enabling students to create and present their research outcomes in the form of a scientific poster.
The student can understand the main ideas of complex texts dealing with general topics as well as their own field of specialisation. They are capable of fluent interaction in spoken communication, including conversation with a native speaker, and can write a coherent piece of text on a broad scale of topics. The target level of the course is B1+. Module Academic Speaking: the student can give an oral presentation of the objectives, methods and results of his/her own technical project. Module Academic Writing: the student can produce a piece of structured, argumentative writing on a selected controversial topic.
Prerequisites
Communicative competence on the CEFR B1 level in general English.

Assessment methods and criteria
Home assignment evaluation, Student performance assessment, Oral performance analysis

A paper dealing with an up-to-date topic from the field of chemistry including the specification and explanation of 5-10 technical terms or expressions (written form, oral presentation).
